Today, I was reading someone's obituary and saw John's photo. Very saddened to read about his passing. I used to work at the dunkin donuts in Buchanan, and he used to come in almost every day for a cup with his friends. Always super friendly, and actually took the time to get to know us on a first name basis. Though I didn't know him well he seemed like a great man, who clearly touched the hearts of many and will be greatly missed!! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Today, I was reading someone's obituary and saw John's photo. I had no idea he passed away. I first met John when we both had deep red Hyundai Sonatas. We would see each other at Dunkin Donuts, the circle and occasionally at village meetings or church. He was always upbeat, friendly and a gentleman. To all his family, I wish to say that he was an amazing man and his passing is a loss for us all.

My wife and I are in shock and saddened by the sudden passing of our noble friend John Mattis. To his brother Joe (whom he always referred to as the HANDSOME one...) Our condolences. To all of his other siblings, nieces and nephews and extended family my wife Kelly and I have all of you in our thoughts and prayers.
I first met John by telephone. He had called my fiancé, Kelly Burgess to congratulate her on our upcoming wedding back in 2005. During our courtship, Kelly would often mention his names many times. Moreover how "smitten" John was with her. During his time with Roger Kahn, He would often come to the Los Angeles Times building to do research on baseball stories and baseball columns for Roger's book "The Boys of Summer". But after talking with him that first time on the telephone he confessed to me that many times he came to the newspaper building just to come hang out with Kelly.
Kelly was the the Executive Administrator to the Sports Editor of the L.A.Times for 28 years and had a vast knowledge of all the sport archival information. Plus being tall, blonde, pretty, and enjoyed NASCAR and baseball, John made sure to maintain a lifelong friendship with my wife.
So, the first thing John asked me was, where is my family was from?. A east coast introduction, something a kid from the west coast who studied in the east learned early on...it was just something everybody back east did. When I told him my Mom was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, he said. " Well you can't be all that bad to marry Kelly, I approve, you have my blessing"
Since that phone call back in 2005 John and I would talk on the phone many times, mainly about baseball, but also about Kelly and our life together since our wedding day.
He was always there to encourage us. When we left Los Angeles and moved to Boise, Idaho several years ago he kept threatening to come visit, since we live on a golf course, John was so angry, yet excited about this fact, because neither Kelly or I play golf. We will miss the phone calls, the Christmas card and the obligatory Xmas letter he would send telling us of his travels, and his visits with family and friends. All of whom we have never met, yet we seem to know you all.
My biggest regret is not taking John up on his offer to go with him to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown...
Kelly and I were deeply impacted by this news. We extended our thoughts & prayers to all his family & friends.

I've knew John for a little over five years and had grown to really enjoy his company. Such a knowledgeable individual on so many subjects. My neighbor and I had a daily 2:00pm date at Dunkin Donuts for coffee. When John joined us we sort of became the Three Musketeers, enjoying each others company for an hour or so each day when he wasn't out doing something for the community he was so involved in. We are going to miss our third Musketeer. If there is golfing in Heaven, John will be there. My deepest sympathy to all who new and loved him. God Bless, John. Safe journey.

Prayers to the Matis family. I have known Joe and John since elementary school and was a classmate of theirs at Prep. I always fondly referred to each of them as “twin” since back then I couldn’t tell them apart. John was obviously a huge humanitarian who will be missed. May he Rest In Peace.

John Matt is aka UNCLE JOHN, was the best friend to me I could ever hope to have. He came into my life when I adopted my beautiful dog Ashley oh, and Uncle John came with the dog. I am so grateful for every minute I've had with him we've shared good times and sad times and he actually went the extra mile and save my life when I was extremely depressed and couldn't find a reason to go on. He gave me that reason. I miss him terribly. He was a friend to everyone he knew any always went the extra mile to help out. He always smiling and he always was upbeat and he made sure he kept me that way during my difficult times food I can never say enough about what a wonderful man he was to me okay. I will see him in every raindrop and every blade of grass in every ray of sunshine. Uncle John taught me how to be the best person I could possibly be. I will carry him in my heart always. He's a beautiful angel in heaven now and I'm sure he's already found some service work to do and some volunteer work and I'm sure he's already helping the sad puppies

I am a reside of the Danish Home, an assisted resident home in Croton. John was faithful in his visits and was a true friend to every resident. Iwas in a rehab facility for three months and John visited me once a week.i It is a weak statement to say, John will be missed. We took him for granted because he was so faithful to us/ It was a wake up call to never take a good friend for granted. He touched a lot of lives in his life.

John was like a brother always offering help, and knowing our medical issues, he regularly checked to make sure we were OK. For 15 years we car pooled to ZBA meetings and jointly analyzed each case over a cup of coffee. I was in the hospital when Sandy hit in 2012. John assisted Anita in moving all the furniture on our river front property to higher ground. Had they not, all would have been lost.
