Obituary of Herbert Matthews
It is with great sadness that the family of Herbert Matthews announce his passing. He was 90 years old.
Herbert was a lifetime resident of Verplanck, NY. He lived there with his wife, Margaret Hrouda and his two sons, Ronald and Russell. He graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School, where he excelled in baseball and track. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for 4 years during the Korean Conflict on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was honorably discharged on February 1952. He was employed by the Hendrick Hudson School District for over 35 years where he worked as a bus driver, bus mechanic and custodian. He retired in 1993.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoying all sports, playing in organized softball in the local firematic leagues. He also excelled as an auto mechanic, enjoying working on his friends and neighbors vehicles in his backyard. He was always willing to lend a helping hand without having to be asked.
He is pre-deceased by his loving wife, Margaret
He is survived by his sons Ronald and Russell and his three grandchildren, Stefanie, Kate and Kelsie.
Considering the recent worldwide occurrences dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19, the family of Herbert Matthews would like to have his Visitation and Graveside Services reserved for immediate family.
