Fran Brown was, for me a singular toke model. She mentored me from my tenure as Addiction Counselor to become her colleague as Assiciate Director of Sicial Wirk at Bellevue. Fran Nd her husband Gene helped me negotiate sicial work school and collaboration on social issues from the AIDS epidemic, two World Trade Center attack’s, and other epochal events. Throughout it all Fran remained one of my most treasured friends. Kenneth Brambill

I was fortunate because Fran was my dear friend and mentor for over 40 years. She has the skill to make everyone feel they were important to her. Her perceptions were remarkable; and her diplomatic and negotiating skills were impressive to behold. She always closely followed politics and advocated for justice and inclusion. She was a social work leader in so many venues. She impacted many lives. She will be sorely missed. Patricia Blau

What was evident about Fran from the moment you met her, besides her great smile and sense of humor, was that she cared deeply and worked tirelessly for the causes and people she loved. She was sensible but sensitive and exuded a warm energy that inspired hope and gave comfort. She will be sorely missed even by those of us who knew her for a brief time. My condolences and thoughts are with her family and friends. WE can find some solace in knowing she certainly made her mark on the lives of those she encountered during her time here.

I was one of the many Presbyterian Hospital social workers whose professional and personal lives were enriched when Fran became our director. How fortunate we were that she had decided on another career step after her long tenure at Bellevue. Fran radiated a humanism and just had an empathic soul. She was totally devoted to making a more just, caring society. Fran was uniquely able to hold firmly to core social work values while deftly navigating the challenges of a changing health care environment. She totally understood and appreciated the needs and complexities of the institution, but within that framework, always advocated for the importance of social work. Fran was fiercely proud of the pioneering roles of Bellevue and Presbyterian in the creation of social work in hospitals Although she had broad policy and administrative responsibilities, Fran never lost sight of the individual patient. She loved when I would request social work ‘special funds’ for circumstances outside of the usual necessities for meds and transportation. She always responded with such genuine emotion and concern for the painful circumstances of an individual patient or family. As the 1199 union delegate, I had an additional, valued relationship with Fran. Although we occasionally had opposing viewpoints, we shared a mutual respect and the mutual goals of quality patient care and positive systemic change. After her retirement, Fran became a regular attendee of the 1199 social work committee. Her insights and contributions were greatly appreciated. My thoughts are very much with her relatives and close friends.

I am always amazed when I think that Fran wasn’t with us at Columbia for long when compared to her Bellevue career and yet she was with us perfectly long enough to make us realize the value and possibility for Social Work in healthcare. I was a new social worker and Fran was a larger than life figure for me- her vision, her ideas and the extent to which she could see possibility in everything around her... including me. You can never forget someone who makes you think that you are better than you are and who helps to mold you according to that vision. Many years after Fran retired from being our Director, she came to Columbia and visited me on the weekend. She was with her nephew that day. I hadn’t seen her in awhile and when I saw her, I couldn’t believe how tiny she was in stature- especially standing next to her nephew! But the second she started talking, her largeness was overwhelming and I was 25 again, absorbing everything she was telling me about the way things could be and sharing ideas to make it happen. I wish I had been in closer touch with her in these last few years to let her know how much of an impact she had on me and many of us who still talk about her at Columbia. Fran, you will always be a giant to us. We remember your kindness, your goodness and the way you shared with us all you were so generously. I can never forget you. And I thank you. My deepest condolences to Fran’s family and friends. We were all so loved.

My deepest sympathy to Fran’s family and close friends. Fran touched our lives in so many ways. Her fierce loyalty and support helped so many of us over the years. It was a privilege and honor to work with Fran at Bellevue and remain connected after both of us left Bellevue. I will remember her as the energetic, kind, committed and loving person she was before her illness. I am sure she is already organizing and volunteering in heaven!! Hopefully there is not much for her to do up there but be with Gene, her parents and her brother.

The loss of a great lady! A true friend to all she ever encountered. Concerned, considerate, loving in all her dealings . The lives she touched are immeasurable. Whether family, friend, patient, student, colleague, direct report or casual acquaintance, Fran was an attentive, non-judgemental listener, and sensitive, no- nonsense adviser. Her kind wisdom will be sorely missed -as will her smile - by all who knew her. Rest In Peace Fran. May we left behind all live up to your standard!

Neither NYC or me - without Fran - will ever be the same. Working with Fran and becoming lifelong friends was one of the best things that ever happened to me, and I will carry her essence with me, always. Fran made a difference in so many people’s lives every single day. Fran was a great one to connect all of the dots, not just for her patients, staff and colleagues, but also in understanding the why’s in the ever-changing landscape of the city and the world. A friend, a mentor, a role model to so many. Rest In Peace.

Fran was a pivotal person in my life - as a professional mentor and a good friend. Fran was an inspirational social worker and as a social work director she influenced and prepared generations of New York City social workers to achieve great things. I have Fran to thank for being able to attain all of my career goals and leadership positions. Fran was nurturing, sincere and ever encouraging. She will be greatly missed by many, but she leaves a great legacy and she truly made a difference. Thank you, Fran, my you rest in peace.

Fran was a consummate social work professional and a woman of enormous integrity and grace. Her accomplishments were beautifully described in the New York Times obituary. She represented the very best of our profession in a committed sustained way. As a former social work director myself, I so admired her skillful leadership in our field around shared values and high ideals that infused her practice. But especially I remember her gentle manner, lovely smile, and love of family. I send my heartfelt thoughts to her family whom I am sure felt blessed by her presence.

Fran was a wonderful lady. She hired my dad and I to do her landscaping. As I got to know her we developed a great relationship that she would say I am your other grandmother. She would always treat me like a grandson and I will truly miss her. She would always make sure she had something ii liked in her fridge for me to drink when I went to service her property. You will be missed With much love From Nino Scaccia

Fran was one of the first persons to welcome me to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Pelham Manor. She would invite me over for dinner and would show me around the sights and sounds of New York. Fran did not see me just as a priest working in her parish, but as a friend and a trusted confidant. Fran's was a faith in action: she saw Christ in the suffering and the marginalized; and that informed her passion for social/racial justice and equality. Fran cherished her Catholic faith so well that we would argue about church history and about who she thought is the best and most Christ-like pope in modern church history: Pope Francis! Fran, you brought sunshine, warmth and love into my life; you made me feel welcomed and valued. My heart aches at you passing. But I know you have answered the call of God who said to you, "Weldone my good and faithful servant, Fran; welcome to the place that you belong". I will miss you always my friend. With faith in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting, requiescat in pacem Christi!
