Obituary of Mary L. Schuka
Mary L. Schuka, 75, a life-long Peekskill resident, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Peekskill on September 16, 1945, daughter of the late Ernest & Lillian K. (Salvatore) Mancini.
She was a graduate of the Ladycliff Academy High School, Class of '63; and also received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
On June 26, 1971, at the Assumption Church in Peekskill, she married Edward J. Schuka, who predeceased her after 45-years of marriage on September 1, 2016. Assumption Church was her home-parish for many years, she served on many event committees alongside her sister Natalie and cousin Mary. After retirement, she volunteered at the Assumption School. In recent years she was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Cortlandt Manor.
Mary worked for over 30–years as an elementary school teacher in the Peekskill City School District, working in the Oakside, Park Street, and lastly Hillcrest Elementary School. Mary was a beloved teacher and a dear friend to her fellow colleagues and will be forever missed by all.
Along with her involvement in the Assumption Church parish, she was an active and loyal member alongside her husband Ed in the Peekskill Elks Lodge 744; she was a member of the Ladies Elks, where she served on many committees and was a past-president.
Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Michelle Schuka; her 5 grandchildren, Chad, Alyssia, Anthony, Joseph & Samantha whom she thought the world of, and they will cherish their Nonna’s memory dearly. Mary is also survived by his sister Natalie Matthews and her niece Vickie Matthews; her brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; especially her dear priest friend Rev. Vernon Wickrematunge who was more like family.
Her Family will receive friends on Friday, March 5, 2021, from 3-7 pm at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, 414 Washington Street, Peekskill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am, Saturday, March 6th at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Cortlandt Manor, followed by interment in the Assumption Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor.
