Obituary of John Coons
John Joseph Coons of Buchanan, NY passed away on June 22, 2021, from complications of emphysema at the age of 78. The son of Andrew and Margaret (Brennan) Coons, he was born in Peekskill, NY on October 6, 1942. He was a 1961 graduate of Peekskill High School and lived in Peekskill for most of his life. John served as a City of Peekskill Police Officer and retired as a detective in 1991. After retirement, he continued to work many years part-time at the Police Station.
He is survived by his daughter Renee Henry of Port Charlotte, FL, his sister Amelia Turriziani of Peekskill, NY, his longtime companion and partner in crime, Jennifer Martin of Buchanan, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents and sisters, Veronica Dvorenja, Mary See, Christina Duarte, and brothers, Benedict and Joseph Coons.
John had a passion for cars, his favorite TV shows, trying new restaurants, country music, Frankie Valli, The Jersey Boys, ice cream, and dressing in his usual attire of Kangol hats and sweater vests. He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, Wildwood, and Las Vegas. Especially trips made to Carlisle, Pennsylvania twice a year with his buddies. He also loved reading the newspaper with a good cup of coffee that was always interrupted by his beloved cat Riley. John is known for his love of laughter, his sense of humor, hearing and telling a good joke, and substituting birthday and wedding cards with a boxed Christmas card.
He will also be remembered for his kindness and generosity towards others. John Coons lived a full life and left an impression on those who met him and will be missed by his family and many friends. He will always be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A celebration of his love of life will be held in the near future.
