A Life of Courage and Conviction
Marie Zarcone, a trailblazer who broke boundaries in both her personal and professional life, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023, at the age of 92, surrounded by her family.
Born to Make a Difference
Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Marie was born on November 25th, 1930, with an innate desire to rise above the ordinary. As her sister joined the workforce in a dress factory, Marie set her sights on achieving something extraordinary.
A Love Story and a Shared Vision
Marie and her future husband, John, crossed paths at New Utrecht High School in the 1940s. The couple envisioned a bright future, with John pursuing medicine and Marie determined to carve out her own career.
Defying Expectations: College and Beyond
Marie's relentless pursuit of success led her to earn a full scholarship to Hunter College, majoring in Journalism and English. In 1952, Marie and John married, and while most women of her time stayed home, Marie continued to defy expectations by working as an editor for several magazines. This enabled her to support her family as a teacher while John attended medical school in Missouri.
A Life of Service and Dedication
Upon returning to Brooklyn in 1963, Marie devoted herself to her community, first as a school principal and later as a special education teacher. In 1969, the family moved to Putnam Valley, New York, where John established himself as an entrepreneurial physician. Marie played a crucial role in running John's medical office until his passing in 1997.
Breaking Glass Ceilings in Politics
Marie's forward-thinking and innovative spirit extended beyond her professional life. She immersed herself in local politics, becoming the first woman legislator in Putnam County, serving on the school board, and paving the way for countless women who followed in her footsteps.
Finding Love and Adventure
In 2005, Marie discovered a new love in Stanley Graham, a retired Hollywood set designer. Together, they embarked on exciting journeys across the globe and enjoyed quality time with friends.
A Lasting Legacy
Marie’s life is a testament to courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to her community. Her refusal to accept mediocrity and her relentless pursuit of excellence will continue to
