Obituary of Mary Ellen DeVitta
Mary Ellen DeVitta
February 25, 1952, to April 28, 2023
It is with much sadness that Mary Ellen DeVitta’s loving family shares that in the early morning hours of Friday, April 28th Mary Ellen entered her heavenly home joining her dear Mother, Doris, Father, Phillip and her two loving grandmothers, Helen Goldberg and Josephine DeVitta.
Daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and dear friend to many, Mary Ellen was the rock of the DeVitta family. She will be remembered in many funny, compassionate, and special ways. Mary Ellen was the family historian and the keeper of the family photographs. She graced many special occasions with archived photos of the birthday girl or the anniversary couple marking the occasion with memories and laughter. She was a lover of the arts and old movies. And not only did she enjoy them herself but would always call an aunt or an uncle to remind them that something great was on television and they should watch and enjoy too!
Mary Ellen was a woman of faith and family. She was so proud of her Catholic family traditions, especially those associated with a perfect childhood of spending Sundays with her extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and enjoying the foods of her grandmothers. She had a kind and compassionate heart, always willing to step in when someone needed her, even sharing her apartment with her dad when a little extra help was needed. She took this compassionate spirit and decided later in life that she would follow her dream of entering the nursing profession. So, at the age of 43 Mary Ellen achieved one of her greatest moments when she graduated from Iona College in New Rochelle as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her nursing career spanned several positions in Adult Day Care and Dialysis Patient Care with hospitals in the New Rochelle area.
Her dear material grandmother, Helen established the Doris Shoppe in downtown Peekskill and Mary Ellen was the third generation of Goldberg women assisting other women in this family business and lovely clothing boutique.
Mary Ellen leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Phillip, Jr. of Florida, sister, Catherine of Peekskill, niece, Christie of Florida, aunt, Mary Ann Rose of Montrose, aunt and uncle, Francis and Nola DeVitta, many cousins with whom she shared a life of love and laughter and her cherished kitty, Bella. Mary Ellen also leaves 2 dear, close friends.
