Hello Ostrowski family,
It was with great sadness that we heard about the passing of Walter. He was an incredible instructor who touched the lives of many students. As current chairperson of the Biological Sciences department, I wanted to pass along some of the messages I received from his colleagues.

"I just wanted to add something (although lengthy) about Walter. We weren’t “close” friends, but a little more than just colleagues, chatting in and outside the classrooms and texting, mostly about the crazy things at all the colleges and, of course, one-upping each other’s bad jokes. Walter began with BCC when Alex offered me a summer Bio 21 Lecture and Lab; I couldn’t cover the Thursday Lab and Alex told me that unless he found someone to cover it he would have to cancel it. A light went off in my head and I said “I know somebody...”. Alex hired Walter, not because I recommended him, but because he was Walter. Five minutes before starting his very first class with BCC Walter texted me: “I can’t pronounce my students’ names!”. I replied “Neither can I!”.
A year later at Pace, after firing a new AP adjunct “mid-semester” for gross incompetence and unprofessional behavior, I reached out, again, to my then Chair saying “I know someone who knows how to teach AP”. He finally agreed to meet with Walter and hired him on the spot, because he was Walter. After walking into his first AP 1 Lab at Pace and seeing the piles of items on the front 12 foot long lab table Walter texted me asking “What you do with all this crap?!” I replied “nothing—just do what you do with BCC and you’ll be fine”.
When I last communicated with Walter in August he told me that the cancer had metastasized to the liver and that he was starting new chemo; a day or so later he only commented on how tired he was from it.
I texted him on Rosh Hashanah, as we always did on Jewish holidays making Yiddish jokes, not knowing that he had passed away a few days earlier. When he didn’t respond I knew he was gone." - M. Weintraub
