Obituary of Carmen Esther Romero Delgado

It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Carmen Esther Romero Delgado, fondly known as Doña Carmen, Mama Carmen, Tía Esther, and Esthercita. Carmen, age 64, departed on November 13, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.

A devoted mother, wife, gardener, and extraordinary individual, Carmen Esther always extended a helping hand to those in need, earning the admiration of many as a guiding figure filled with wisdom and advice.

She passed away at NYP Hudson Valley Hospital due to cardiorespiratory complications following an unfortunate fall. She was surrounded by her beloved family in her last hours.

Her journey was marked by a resilient battle against kidney and congestive heart failure due to Amyloidosis, enduring years of chemotherapy & dialysis treatments.

Born on September 23, 1959, Carmen Esther grew up alongside her parents & seven siblings in “Moisol,” on the outskirts of Girón, Ecuador.

Her passion for life, nature, and nurturing living things led her to study biochemistry in college. During her sophomore year, she welcomed her first-born son, Santiago David, whom she cherished deeply. As a single mother, Carmen made the difficult decision to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of better opportunities. Her father supported her journey but insisted she leave her son with them for safety, promising to raise him as their own.

Upon arriving in the US, Carmen worked tirelessly across three jobs to support her son in Ecuador, facing immense heartache due to her inability to return or secure a visa for him. It was during this time that she met her husband, Manuel, settled in Peekskill and welcomed three more children: Erika, Evelyn, and Mark. As an active member of the Church of Assumption, Carmen devoted her time to volunteer work with Manos Abiertas, a group dedicated to fundraising for those in need. Her renowned empanadas were a delight and sought after, and she opened her home to numerous individuals requiring temporary housing, as well as her children's many high school exchange students.

Carmen’s peaceful sanctuary was her “huerta” and her green thumb brought life and beauty to every corner.

Among her many accomplishments, Carmen fulfilled her dream of putting her four children through college, achieving her Naturalized US Citizenship in 2021, and was able to meet her three grandchildren Richard, Samuel, & Jaqueline.

Carmen Esther was the epitome of strength and authenticity, facing chronic illness with grace, and resilience, and always bearing a smile. Her presence in our community was treasured, and she touched the hearts of many.

Visitation will be held at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home located at 414 Washington Street, Peekskill, NY 10566 on Monday, November 20, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Funeral Mass will be held at The Church of the Assumption located at 920 1st Avenue, Peekskill, NY 10566 on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 11:30 am

Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery.

Con profundo dolor compartimos el fallecimiento de Carmen Esther Romero Delgado, conocida cariñosamente como Doña Carmen, Mamá Carmen, Tía Esther y Esthercita. Carmen, de 64 años, partió el 13 de noviembre de 2023, dejando atrás un legado de amor y compasión.

Carmen Esther, madre devota, esposa, jardinera y persona extraordinaria, siempre tendió una mano a los necesitados, ganándose la admiración de muchos como una figura guía llena de sabiduría y consejos.

Falleció en el NYP Hudson Valley Hospital debido a complicaciones cardiorrespiratorias luego de una desafortunada caída. Estuvo rodeada de su querida familia en sus últimas horas.

Su viaje estuvo marcado por una batalla resistente contra la insuficiencia renal y cardíaca congestiva debido a la amiloidosis, soportando años de tratamientos de quimioterapia y diálisis.

Nacida el 23 de septiembre de 1959, Carmen Esther creció junto a sus padres y siete hermanos en “Moisol”, en las afueras de Girón, Ecuador.

Su pasión por la vida, la naturaleza y el cuidado de los seres vivos la llevaron a estudiar bioquímica en la universidad. Durante su segundo año, le dio la bienvenida a su primogénito, Santiago David, a quien apreciaba profundamente. Como madre soltera, Carmen tomó la difícil decisión de emigrar a los Estados Unidos en busca de mejores oportunidades. Su padre apoyó su viaje, pero insistió en que dejara a su hijo con ellos por seguridad, prometiendo criarlo como si fuera suyo.

Al llegar a los EE. UU., Carmen trabajó incansablemente en tres trabajos para mantener a su hijo en Ecuador, enfrentando un inmenso dolor debido a su incapacidad de regresar o conseguir una visa para él. Fue durante este tiempo que conoció a su esposo, Manuel, se instaló en Peekskill y dio la bienvenida a tres hijos más: Erika, Evelyn y Mark. Como miembro activo de la Iglesia de la Asunción, Carmen dedicó su tiempo al trabajo voluntario con Manos Abiertas, un grupo dedicado a recaudar fondos para los necesitados. Sus renombradas empanadas eran una delicia y buscadas, y abrió su casa a numerosas personas que necesitaban alojamiento temporal, así como a los numerosos estudiantes de intercambio de secundaria de sus hijos.

El tranquilo santuario de Carmen era su “huerta” y su habilidad para la jardinería traía vida y belleza a cada rincón.

Entre sus muchos logros, Carmen cumplió su sueño de llevar a sus cuatro hijos a la universidad, lograr su ciudadanía estadounidense naturalizada en 2021 y pudo conocer a sus tres nietos, Richard, Samuel y Jaqueline.

Carmen Esther fue la personificación de la fuerza y ​​la autenticidad, enfrentó las enfermedades crónicas con gracia y resiliencia, y siempre con una sonrisa. Su presencia en nuestra comunidad fue muy apreciada y tocó los corazones de muchos.

El velorio se llevará a cabo en Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home ubicado en 414 Washington Street, Peekskill, NY 10566 el lunes 20 de noviembre de 2023, de 1:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m.

La misa fúnebre se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia de la Asunción ubicada en 920 1st Avenue, Peekskill, NY 10566 el miércoles 22 de noviembre de 2023 a las 11:30 am.

Seguirá el entierro en el Cementerio de la Asunción.
