My grandmother was my best friend. They say most people start their mornings out with a cup of coffee, for me I took a different approach…I needed something stronger, and that something was my best friend, my grandmother Joan. For the past ten years I started out each day with a phone call to my grandmother. Every morning on my way to work I called my grandmother to catch up. It’s funny, it is my experience that people who still use a phone today to catch up do so about once a week. A routine of that nature didn’t work for my grandmother and I. My grandmother and I spoke on the phone almost every single morning for the past 10 years during my morning drive to work. Every phone call began with Joan’s famous greeting…”Well Hellllloooo”. We never had a phone call without the Mets or politics being discussed, and we never ended a call without telling each other “I love you.” When I return to work on Friday, I am doing so knowing my best friend won’t be there with me to talk about last night’s baseball game or what’s new in the world of politics. My mornings will never be the same and for the first time in 10 years I will be driving to work without my best friend by my side. I will miss you forever Joan.
