Coach Wally was my coach last year during the 2021-2022 basketball season. Over the course of those few months together, Coach Wally cared about the other girls and me and helped me build my love for the game. Coach Wally would stay after practice to help me work on my shot whenever I needed. He was always there to talk. I remember I had one really incredible game last year against Lakeland. I had 17 points in that game I came out of the game and Coach Wally touched my forehead and said" let me check how hot you are." he made me smile and want to work harder and harder to get better every single day. I will miss him and honor him every time I play and every time I step on a court.

Just heard the news of the passing of Wally Knapp. Wally coached many years at Yorktown High School, particularly girls basketball and softball. He was a gentle and kind man who enjoyed coaching young people. He advocated for girls sports and just like his style of coaching, did it in a low key but effective way. Wally enjoyed telling stories about his coaching experiences and always doing anything to help make his players have a positive and fun experience. He will be missed by the many friends and colleagues who knew him. Fio Nardone

Anyone who knew "Coach Wally" knew how much he loved sports and coaching kids. I am proud to have known Wally for quite a few years in a coaching capacity. He was my right hand man on the sidelines with varsity girls' basketball and enjoyed coaching the freshman and JV teams for quite a few years. He was my voice of reason and my extra set of eyes. He had his own way of telling it like it is and had a knack for explaining situations from a different perspective in order for informed decisions to be made. I'll miss his warmth and welcoming demeanor along with his friendship. He was so dedicated to the kids and community and passed his wealth of knowledge onto so many. Coach Wally will be sorely missed by all.

I will forever remember Wally fondly. In particular I will miss him when I go to the community pool, where he was often seated shmoozing with friends. He always offered a ready smile and a warm welcome, and his presence in our community was like the loving embrace of a wise and respected keeper of our collective community memory. I am grateful to have known him.
